Newly appointed Ambassador to Japan, Ahmed Mahloof, has expressed his gratitude to Members of Parliament for unanimously approving his nomination and pledged to work towards further enhancing bilateral ties between the Maldives and Japan.

Ambassador Mahloof’s appointment was endorsed on Wednesday with 60 votes in favour. Following his appointment, he issued a statement on X acknowledging the cross-party support from PNC, MDP, MDA and JP lawmakers, and thanked President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for placing his trust in him to serve in a new diplomatic capacity.

Ambassador Mahloof said he is committed to advancing the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Japan, noting that 2025 celebrates the 58th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He highlighted Japan’s continued role as a key development partner, contributing significantly to the Maldives’ progress over the decades.

He further assured Maldivians residing in, visiting, or requiring assistance in Japan that the Embassy would remain accessible and responsive to their needs.

Ambassador Mahloof previously served as Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment from 2018 to 2023, and earlier as a Member of Parliament. His new appointment fills the vacancy left following the passing of former Ambassador.
