The Maldives has made sporting history after securing the silver medal in the women’s team event at the 7th Carrom World Cup, the first time a Maldivian team has ever reached the final of the prestigious international tournament.
The Maldivian women’s team finished second after competing against India in the championship match, scoring the country’s highest achievement in World Cup team competition. More than 150 athletes from 17 countries are participating in this year’s event, organised by the International Carrom Federation (ICF).
In the doubles match, India’s duo ndefeated the Maldivian pair Aishath 2–1. The Indian duo won the first set 25–8, before Maldives levelled the match with a 17–13 lead in the second. India secured the decisive third set 25–5.
India also won both singles matches. Hazima claimed victory over Aminath Waleed in straight sets (24–8, 25–8), while Keerthana defeated Aishath Fainaz with scores of 24–6 and 25–1.
The achievement is a significant milestone for Maldives in competitive carrom. At the previous World Cup held in the United States, the country won bronze medals in both the men's and women’s team events. The last time the Maldives hosted a Carrom World Cup was in 2014 at Sun Island Resort.
