The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has shut down 11 expatriate-run businesses after receiving 125 reports of illegally operated establishments.

According to the Ministry, inspections were carried out at 35 locations, including 20 cafés, 12 retail outlets, two garages, and one guesthouse. The closures were enforced due to violations such as operating without valid permits, including the unauthorised sale of tobacco products.

The investigations were conducted by the national task force established to identify and address businesses unlawfully operated by expatriates. Officials stated that further inquiries are ongoing in collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies.

The Ministry has urged the public to report suspected illegal business activities by contacting its hotline (3333199) or submitting information via its website between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on all days except public holidays. It also appealed for accurate and reliable reporting to support enforcement efforts.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Ministry stated that the Government continues to work towards ensuring regulatory compliance, preventing unlawful activities, and maintaining a fair and competitive business environment across the Maldives.
