Recipient of Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (ODRI) Aneesa Ahmed has stated that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s public meetings are a positive initiative, noting that such platforms play an important role in bringing social issues to the forefront.
Speaking after attending the President’s meeting with residents of Maafannu, Aneesa said that while the initiative to meet directly with citizens is commendable, she is concerned that the sessions are becoming increasingly politicised. She noted that the meetings provide a valuable opportunity for individuals, particularly those dealing with trauma or vulnerable circumstances, to voice their concerns directly to the country’s leadership.
Aneesa, who also founded Hope for Women, a leading organisation advocating for women’s rights, said that meaningful discussions on social challenges would give the President clearer insight into the lived realities of citizens and help shape more effective solutions. She noted, however, that similar patterns of politicisation were observed during the previous two meetings in Malé City, expressing hope that future forums would focus more strongly on community issues.
President Dr Muizzu has so far conducted three public engagement sessions in the Greater Malé Region, meeting residents of Vilimalé, Machangolhi, and Maafannu. The meetings are part of an initiative to listen directly to citizens’ concerns and gather feedback on community issues.
