The rally organised by Sri Lankans living in the Maldives to thank the Maldivian Government and public -- MMTV

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassan, has said that the Maldives’ assistance to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwa “will be written in golden letters”, expressing deep gratitude on behalf of the Sri Lankan people.

He made the remarks at a rally organised by Sri Lankans living in the Maldives to thank the Maldivian Government and public for their support following the devastating cyclone. The event, held in front of the Public Service Department of Malé City Council, drew a large crowd of Sri Lankan nationals carrying posters of appreciation.

Speaking to local media, participants said they would “never forget” the compassion shown by Maldivians during Sri Lanka’s time of need. They highlighted that the Maldives was the first country to extend assistance after the disaster and noted that, despite its small size, the Maldives provided “remarkably generous” support.

The Government of the Maldives contributed USD 50,000 and 25,000 cases of canned tuna towards relief efforts. Additionally, a nationwide telethon organised by Maldivian media outlets raised MVR 12.3 million, with strong contributions from businesses, Government offices, NGOs, and the general public.

Cyclone Ditwa affected 22 villages across Sri Lanka, resulting in the country’s deadliest natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. At least 479 people have been confirmed dead, while 366 remain missing.
