President meets Taxi Drivers’ Association to discuss sector challenges

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the Taxi Drivers’ Association on Tuesday at the President’s Office to discuss challenges facing taxi services and measures to strengthen the sector.

The meeting focused on identifying practical solutions to difficulties encountered by taxi drivers and improving overall service delivery. The Association shared several proposals, including improved arrangements for the registration and parking of vehicles used for taxi services, as well as possible changes to help ease traffic congestion in Malé.

The Association also conveyed its views on the Government’s planned taxi line and engaged in discussions on taxi drivers’ register.

During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the importance of maintaining an taxi drivers’ register as a key step toward addressing issues faced by drivers. He also highlighted measures currently being considered by the Government to facilitate and support taxi drivers, and assured that efforts would be made to resolve concerns raised by both taxi drivers and other service providers in the sector.

The Government has been undertaking initiatives aimed at improving conditions for taxi drivers. Regarding the planned Government-run taxi line, President Dr Muizzu has previously said the service is intended to ensure drivers earn a sustainable income. The Government has also introduced a dedicated category for taxi drivers under its social housing scheme.
