More than one million trees have been planted across the Maldives so far under the Five Million Tree initiative, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Tuesday, the Minister said a total of 1,027,372 trees have been planted nationwide under the initiative.
He added that private businesses, State owned enterprises (SOEs), and various associations have collectively pledged to plant 6.4 million trees as part of the programme. The Ministry is currently working closely with those who have made pledges to ensure the committed targets are met, with tree planting to be carried out according to a structured schedule.
Highlighting progress across the islands, Minister Thoriq said at least two teak trees have been provided and planted on every inhabited island under the programme.
The Minister also noted that China has donated a plant nursery to support the initiative. The nursery is scheduled to begin operations on 30 December and will be used to cultivate trees and shrubs sourced from abroad, as well as to train personnel involved in implementing the Five Million Tree initiative.
In addition, the Government plans to establish nurseries in selected islands to support local distribution of seedlings required for the programme, the Minister said.
The Minister also added that the Ministry of Tourism and Environment is also in the process of procuring electric vehicles to support the watering and maintenance of newly planted trees.
