The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure signed agreements with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on January 6 for the implementation of 14 development projects across 14 islands.
The agreements were signed by Minister of State for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed on behalf of the ministry, while Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudee signed on behalf of MTCC.
The projects span multiple atolls and include large-scale land reclamation, coastal and shore protection works, harbour development and expansion, artificial beach construction, industrial zone development and road infrastructure upgrades. Contract values range from approximately MVR 13 million to more than MVR 255 million, with project durations varying between 160 days and 1,140 days depending on scope and complexity.
Several islands will receive land reclamation and shore protection works, including Noonu Hen’badhoo, Holhudhoo, Gaafu Alifu Kanduhulhudhoo, Dhaalu Bandidhoo, Noonu Maalhendhoo and Haa Alifu Vashafaru. These projects involve the reclamation of new land areas, construction of revetments, groynes and breakwaters, as well as the creation of swimming areas, boat beaching zones and coastal protection structures aimed at reducing erosion and strengthening shoreline resilience.
Coastal protection works are also planned for reclaimed land areas in Noonu Maafaru and the Raa Alifushi Industrial Zone, where the projects include boulder revetments, geobag revetments, drainage works and industrial infrastructure preparation. Shore protection projects in Haa Alifu Filladhoo and Kaafu Gaafaru will involve beach restoration, groyne and revetment works to stabilise shorelines.
Harbour development and expansion projects are set to be carried out in Raa Ungoofaaru and Haa Alifu Muraidhoo, including the construction and repair of jetties, breakwaters, ramps, outer walls and harbour pavements, alongside the installation of street lighting and safety features. An artificial beach development project will also be implemented in Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo, involving submerged breakwaters and groyne construction.
In addition, Phase Two of the road development project in Gaafu Dhaalu Faresmaathodaa will focus on road modernisation, the establishment of drainage systems, and the installation of street signage and lighting to improve connectivity and road safety.
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that the projects are aimed at addressing land shortages, strengthening coastal protection, improving transport and harbour facilities, and enhancing public infrastructure across islands nationwide, in line with the government’s broader development agenda
