Maldives Police Service officers --
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that it will continue to provide the necessary security and protection for activities conducted in accordance with the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act.
In a statement issued on Thursday night, police reiterated that the right to assemble peacefully is guaranteed under Article 32 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives. MPS said this constitutional right, along with the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and its first amendment, would be protected without discrimination, provided assemblies are held within the framework of the law.
The statement comes amid ongoing demonstrations in parts of Malé, where road closures have disrupted traffic, inconvenienced pedestrians and motorists, and affected businesses. Police noted that they have received complaints regarding these disruptions.
MPS stressed that organisers of protests and demonstrations are required by law to respect public safety, the flow of traffic, and the rights of others.
They also reminded the public that, under Section 24(f) of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, no gathering or march may be held in Malé without written authorisation from the police, except in areas designated and publicly announced by the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology.
The statement reiterated that assemblies held outside the designated areas, particularly those that infringe upon the rights of the general public, will not be allowed. In this regard, MPS said unlawful gatherings would be dispersed, organisers could face legal action, and all necessary measures would be taken to safeguard the public interest.
The statement further noted that while peaceful assembly is a fundamental constitutional right, it must be exercised in a manner that respects public safety and the rights and freedoms of others.
MPS also assured that they would continue to provide security for lawful demonstrations and marches, including traffic management and any additional safety arrangements needed to ensure such events proceed in a safe and orderly manner.
