Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that the number of Maldivian Huffaz has reached 291, with the figure expected to rise to 300 before the start of Ramadan.

The Minister shared the update in a post, noting that steady progress is being made in expanding Quran memorisation efforts across the country.

The Government has prioritised on increasing the number of Huffaz and recognising their contributions. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has doubled the allowance provided to Huffaz, as part of measures to support and encourage Quran memorisation.

Minister Dr Shaheem also highlighted that special graduation ceremonies for Huffaz have been held since 2024. This Ramadan, 30 Huffaz are scheduled to graduate on the 27th of Ramadan. During Ramadan last year, 24 Huffaz completed their memorisation and graduated.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs said its long-term target is to increase the number of Huffaz to 500 within the next five years.

At present, more than 1,500 students are memorising the Quran in Malé and across the atolls. The Ministry described this as a historically significant figure, reflecting growing interest and participation in Quran memorisation nationwide.
