The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has cautioned that air pollution levels across parts of the Maldives have reached hazardous levels, posing a risk to public health.

In an advisory issued, the Met Office said air quality is poor in the northern and central regions of the country today, prompting the issuance of a red alert. The agency said air pollution levels are expected to remain hazardous for the next six hours, advising the public to exercise caution, including individuals without pre-existing health conditions.

Air quality monitoring data shows that pollution levels in the capital region have risen sharply. Readings from the monitoring station in Vilimalé show an air quality index of 193, while Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo recorded a level of 162, both indicating unhealthy conditions.

The Met Office said distant visibility is expected to gradually improve after Saturday as conditions ease.

The air pollution is attributed to dust particles originating from northern regions, including India and the Himalayan area, which are carried towards the Maldives during the Northeast monsoon. Similar conditions are observed annually during this monsoon period.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions until air quality improves.
