President assures full Government support for missing diver search operation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured full Government support for the ongoing search and recovery operation following the tragic incident involving five Italian divers in Vaavu Atoll.
President Dr Muizzu visited the area on Friday to review the search and rescue efforts being carried out by authorities after the divers went missing while diving in the atoll.
During the visit, relevant authorities briefed the President on the operations underway to locate the missing divers. He also met with officials involved in the operation and representatives from the diving sector.
The President assured that all necessary assistance and arrangements required for the operation would be provided by the Government. He also expressed hope for the success of the teams involved in the search mission.
Accompanying the President during the visit were Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen and Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef.
Authorities received reports at around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday that five divers who had gone diving in Vaavu Atoll were missing.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) later said one diver was found dead inside a cave located about 60 metres underwater. Authorities believe the remaining four missing divers may also be inside the cave.
Search and recovery efforts are continuing.
Following the incident, President Dr Muizzu conveyed condolences to Italian President Sergio Mattarella and the people of Italy.
