The State collected MVR 3.24 billion in revenue in December, reflecting a 30.7 per cent increase compared to the same month the previous year, according to statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

MIRA reported that MVR 2.48 billion was collected in December 2024, with the year-on-year growth in revenue largely driven by improved performance in the tourism sector. The authority attributed the increase primarily to higher earnings from tourism-related taxes, including Green Tax and resort rent.

According to MIRA, tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased by 12.8 per cent during the period, contributing to stronger revenue collection from tourism-based sources. The authority also noted that total revenue collected in December was 17.4 per cent higher than the projected figures for tourism revenue, goods and services tax (GST), and resort rental income.

In addition to tourism-related taxes, MIRA said that higher collections from land sales, land transfer fees and corporate social responsibility fees also supported the overall increase in state revenue for the month.

A breakdown of the figures shows that GST accounted for the largest share of revenue collected in December, amounting to MVR 1.72 billion, or 53.2 per cent of total revenue. Resort rent generated MVR 519 million, while Green Tax contributed MVR 218.7 million. Other major sources included departure tax at MVR 191.3 million, Airport Development Fee at MVR 176 million, and income tax totalling MVR 160 million.

MIRA also stated that revenue collected in December included USD 157.83 million, representing a 40 per cent increase compared to the USD 112.82 million collected during the same period in 2024.
