JSC records 261 cases in 2025

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) received a total of 261 cases in 2025, an increase of 82 cases compared to the previous year, according to statistics released by the commission.

Judicial Service Commission said that of the cases submitted during the year, 137 cases, accounting for 51.7 per cent, were found to be unrelated to the judiciary. A further 54 cases, or 20.7 per cent, remain under review, while 72 cases, representing 27.6 per cent, were forwarded for investigation.

The commission said it investigated a total of 87 cases in 2025. These included 72 new cases submitted during the year and 15 cases carried over from previous years.

According to the JSC, 18 cases were concluded during the year. Outcomes included the referral of three judges to Parliament for dismissal, disciplinary measures against two judges through mandatory training, and the suspension of two judges.

The commission also provided updates on judicial appointments and staffing levels. By the end of 2025, a total of 204 judges were serving across courts in the Maldives. During the year, four judges were appointed to the Supreme Court, two to the High Court, four to superior courts, and 24 judges were appointed to Magistrate Courts.

The JSC noted that the overall number of judges increased during the year following new appointments, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary and address case management needs across the court system.
