The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has said that the biggest challenge affecting its ability to pay employee pension contributions is the large amount of outstanding payments owed to the company, including MVR 98 million from the Malé City Council alone.
In a statement, WAMCO explained the reasons behind the difficulties in depositing pension contributions for its employees and outlined the steps being taken to resolve the issue.
The company said it currently pays employee salaries using its own revenue, along with Government subsidies provided to ensure affordable waste management services across the country.
According to WAMCO, its revenue is generated from payments due for waste management services provided to customers. However, a significant portion of these payments has remained unpaid for extended periods.
WAMCO stated that the Malé City Council has failed to settle MVR 98 million owed to the company. It added that multiple meetings were held with the council in 2024 and 2025 in an effort to recover the outstanding amount.
The company said it has also sought assistance from the Ministry of Finance and Planning to help secure the funds owed by the council, stressing that timely payments are essential to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and to meet salary and allowance obligations to employees.
WAMCO said it is currently engaged in discussions with the Finance Ministry to explore options for raising the required funds.
In addition, the company confirmed that it has held several discussions with the Maldives Pension Administration Office regarding the challenges it faces in depositing pension contributions for its employees.
WAMCO said it remains committed to resolving the issue and ensuring that employee pension payments are made.
