Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed has said the company is operating in a financially sustainable manner, while delivering development projects in line with international quality standards.
Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Matheen said MWSC’s governance framework and business model have enabled the company to maintain reliable utility services while adapting to a changing national and political environment. He noted that the company’s shareholding structure, which includes both local and international stakeholders, has strengthened oversight and long-term planning.
Matheen said the provision of water and sewerage services must, by law, be sustainable, requiring a balance between financial viability and affordability for the public. He explained that MWSC has been able to meet this requirement by maintaining stable core services while expanding into additional revenue-generating activities.
According to the managing director, this approach has reduced pressure on customers, as diversification allows MWSC to maintain service quality without increasing prices for essential utilities. He added that while water services remain the company’s primary source of income, revenue from other operations has strengthened overall financial resilience.
Matheen also highlighted the role of MWSC’s workforce, saying the quality of projects delivered reflects the capability and professionalism of the company’s employees. He said MWSC adheres to ISO standards in the implementation of water and sewerage projects, with compliance verified through annual audits.
The managing director said MWSC remains committed to completing Government-assigned projects within agreed timelines, while continuing to provide safe, affordable and sustainable utility services to the public.
