First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science by recognising the achievements of women and girls in the field of science and highlighting the need to address persistent gender barriers.

In a message shared on her official X account, the First Lady said the day serves not only to celebrate accomplishments, but also to acknowledge the resilience of girls who aspire to careers in science despite societal expectations. She also recognised the role of parents, educators and communities in supporting young girls to pursue their ambitions.

She noted that stereotypes about who belongs in science continue to influence homes, classrooms and workplaces. Citing research findings, she said girls perform as well as, and in some cases better than, boys in science and mathematics. However, limited encouragement and access to opportunities often prevent them from fully realising their potential, with such barriers emerging from an early age.

Describing the issue as a serious global challenge, the First Lady called for collective effort to create meaningful change. She emphasised that progress begins with individual choices and the support extended to young girls, adding that deliberate action can help reshape opportunities for future generations.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed annually following its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly to promote equal participation of women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields.
