Minister Dr Khaleel highlights Maldives’ democratic reforms at UN Human Rights Council

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has highlighted the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance while addressing the General Debate of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday.

Delivering the Maldives’ national statement, Minister Dr Khaleel outlined measures being undertaken to reinforce the rule of law and enhance institutional accountability. He pointed to progress in anti-corruption initiatives, expanded support for vulnerable and marginalised groups including women entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities and children, as well as improvements in social services.

The Minister also noted the Maldives’ continued engagement with international human rights mechanisms. He referenced the completion of the country’s fourth Universal Periodic Review and reaffirmed support for greater participation of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDs) in the work of the Council.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Minister Dr Khaleel stressed the enduring relevance of its founding principle that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. He emphasised the shared responsibility of the international community to uphold these universal values.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of strengthened multilateral cooperation in promoting and protecting human rights, particularly in the face of emerging global challenges. He called for the preservation of the credibility and impartiality of the international human rights system through constructive dialogue and principled engagement.

During his address, Minister Dr Khaleel formally announced the Maldives’ candidature for election to the Human Rights Council for the 2028 to 2030 term.

Concluding his statement, he urged the Council to uphold credible standards, ensure inclusive processes and deliver meaningful outcomes, while reiterating the Maldives’ commitment to the universality, indivisibility and interdependence of all human rights at both the national and international levels.
