Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that long-pending development projects in Malé City will move forward without delay if People’s National Congress (PNC) mayoral candidate Major General (Retired) Moosa Ali Jaleel is elected.
Thoriq made the remarks in an interview with MMTV during a door-to-door campaign conducted by PNC candidates contesting the Maafannu Central constituency.
Describing Jaleel as a capable, disciplined and trustworthy leader, Thoriq said he brings extensive experience from years of national service and senior-level responsibilities. He noted that Jaleel has worked closely with large institutions and has a strong understanding of administrative and governance processes.
The Minister stated that councils are not formed to confront the Government, but to work in coordination with the Government to implement policies and deliver services to the public. In this regard, he said Jaleel possesses the experience and leadership required to ensure effective collaboration.
Referring to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor of Malé, Thoriq said a number of initiatives were launched at the time, including programmes to enhance the city’s streetscape and install religious signage across key areas. He added that several of these efforts stalled after President Dr Muizzu assumed office as Head of State and a new mayor took office.
Thoriq expressed confidence that unfinished initiatives in Malé would be revived and expedited under Jaleel’s leadership. He further stated that while some candidates focus their campaigns on holding the Government accountable, the principal responsibility of a city council is to provide essential services and address the needs of residents.
He added that Jaleel is committed to ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and that necessary development work in the capital proceeds in a timely manner.
