President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited Giraavaru Falhu on Saturday to review the progress of the ongoing land reclamation project, a key Government initiative aimed at addressing the Maldives’ housing shortage.
The President was accompanied by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, along with Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, and senior officials from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), including Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
During the visit, the President was briefed on the latest developments and inspected ongoing dredging and land reclamation works. The project, undertaken by MACL, forms a central part of efforts to expand land availability in the Greater Malé region.
Under the second phase of the project, a total of 97.15 hectares is to be reclaimed, of which 35 hectares has been completed to date. Across both phases, the total reclamation target for Giraavaru Falhu stands at 167.15 hectares, of which 105 hectares have already been reclaimed.
Land reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu are ongoing with two dredgers operating simultaneously. President Dr Muizzu has previously announced that land reclamation is expected to be completed by April, with plot handover planned to commence in June.
