The National Disability Council (NDC) has strongly condemned remarks made by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid during a party political event held on the evening of 28 March.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Council said the comments were made at a ceremony titled “Launching of the Fahi Fehi Thinadhoo City Manifesto,” and stressed that such remarks undermine the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities.

The Council reiterated that persons with disabilities are entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms under international conventions to which the Maldives is a State Party. It also highlighted that Article 35 of the Constitution guarantees special protection, including the right to dignity, autonomy and independent living.

Expressing concern over the use of derogatory language by a senior political figure, the Council said such statements not only show disrespect towards persons with disabilities but also weaken efforts to build a more inclusive society.

The Council further noted that recent public discourse portraying persons with disabilities as subjects of ridicule is unacceptable and warrants strong condemnation.

As the national body mandated to promote and empower persons with disabilities, the Council emphasised that any derogatory or demeaning references to disability constitute a violation of their rights and well-being. It called on all individuals, particularly those in positions of influence, to refrain from discriminatory language and instead contribute to fostering a more inclusive and respectful society.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Council said it will continue its efforts to ensure the protection and full realisation of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities across the Maldives.
