President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that local councils are part of the State’s governance structure and are not responsible for holding the Government accountable.

Speaking at the People’s National Congress (PNC) rally last night, the President said councils play a key role in supporting and facilitating the Government’s day-to-day efforts to serve the public. He emphasised that, under the legal framework, councils operate within the broader system of governance rather than as oversight bodies.

The President, therefore, called for the election of council representatives who will cooperate with the Government’s development agenda, particularly in advancing projects across the islands.

He urged citizens to consider national progress and local development when voting, stressing the importance of electing councillors who align with the Government’s plans for rural and community development.

President Dr Muizzu also noted that several development projects are set to be implemented across different islands in the coming period as part of his commitments. He warned that electing councils that do not support these efforts could hinder local progress.

Concluding his remarks, the President encouraged voters to set aside political differences and participate in the upcoming council and Women’s Development Committee elections with a focus on the country’s overall development.
