Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives will enable Maldivians to expand their participation in the global digital economy and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs, freelancers and content creators.
Speaking at the official launch of PayPal services in the Maldives, Minister Saeed described the rollout as the end of a decade-long wait and said it was the result of efforts undertaken by the Government since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November 2023. He said the launch removes a major obstacle that had limited the ability of Maldivians to engage fully with international digital markets.
The Minister said the service would open new opportunities for content creators, freelancers and small businesses by providing access to global payment systems and international customers. He described the launch as the beginning of a new chapter for Maldivians seeking to participate in the global economy through digital platforms.
Minister Saeed also linked the introduction of PayPal to the Government's economic goals, noting that the Administration aims for the digital economy to contribute 15 per cent of the Maldives' GDP by 2030. He said achieving that target would require the expansion of modern digital services, convenient payment solutions and greater participation by Maldivians in international markets, adding that the launch of PayPal represents an important step towards that objective.
Concluding his remarks, the Minister thanked President Dr Muizzu for supporting the country's digital transformation agenda and creating new opportunities for economic growth and productivity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ooredoo Maldives Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Shadi Qawasmi said the launch of PayPal through Ooredoo's services marks an important step in strengthening the Maldivian economy and improving connectivity with the global digital marketplace.
The introduction of PayPal was one of President Dr Muizzu's pledges and is expected to strengthen digital payment services available in the Maldives. The service is also expected to support the development of digital wallets and modern online payment systems while expanding access to international financial transactions.
