Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stated that the Maldivian health sector aims to strengthen reliance on science and technology to maintain public trust and improve healthcare outcomes.
In his message celebrating World Health Day, the minister emphasised the importance of evidence-based decision-making in health policies, noting that all measures aimed at improving public health must be grounded in modern science, research findings, technical knowledge and experience.
He highlighted that key areas of the health system, including disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, vaccination and health data management, are guided by scientific evidence and technological advancements. The minister added that initiatives such as telemedicine, health information systems and early detection of non-communicable diseases are part of this approach.
The minister also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of relying on science in responding to health challenges, both in the Maldives and globally. He said existing health policies reflect a strong emphasis on science-based approaches, including primary healthcare, preventive care, control of tobacco use, management of non-communicable diseases, addressing antimicrobial resistance, and the use of vaccines and medical technologies.
Minister Nazim Ibrahim further stated that the Government is prioritising the quality and safety of healthcare services, while increasing investment in research, new technologies and human resource development to strengthen the health system and maintain public confidence.
World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, aims to raise awareness on key health issues and promote collective action at individual, community and national levels to ensure physical, mental and social well-being.
