Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Government is actively monitoring a total of 164 essential goods to prevent shortages and ensure uninterrupted access for the public.

The Minister stated this at press briefing by the Special Cabinet Committee on Middle East tensions stated that the Government is closely monitoring changes in the prices of essential commodities.

Providing details on efforts undertaken to ensure the steady availability of basic food items, Minister Saeed said the Government is actively monitoring a total of 164 essential goods to prevent shortages and ensure uninterrupted access for the public.

He noted that key staples such as cooking oil, rice, sugar and flour, along with an additional 26 essential items, are being closely tracked on a daily basis. He emphasised that continuous monitoring is being carried out to ensure these goods remain available without disruption.

Minister Saeed also highlighted that from the outset of global economic uncertainties, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu prioritised assessing potential impacts on the Maldives’ economy and the well-being of its citizens.

As part of these efforts, the Government has engaged with international markets and suppliers to secure the import of essential goods, including fuel and food items. The Minister noted that these engagements have resulted in successful arrangements to ensure a stable supply of necessary commodities.

He further stated that, through coordinated efforts with multiple stakeholders, systems are now in place to ensure that no essential item faces shortages and that goods remain available in sufficient quantities.

Additionally, the Minister said discussions have been held with relevant agencies to maintain and strengthen these systems in the future. He emphasised that reducing the impact of global market fluctuations on the local market remains a key priority for the Government.
