Maldivian tuna has received a green rating under the “Seafood Watch” programme by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which guides seafood purchasing decisions for companies and consumers in the United States.
The green rating signifies that wild-caught and farm-raised seafood classified under this category is environmentally sustainable, well-managed, and sourced in ways that cause little or no harm to marine habitats or other wildlife.
Under the latest assessment, Maldivian skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna each received a green score of 4.436.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources stated that, under the newly released guidance, tuna fisheries in the Maldives have been classified as a sustainable fishery. While some sustainability concerns remain in parts of the Indian Ocean, Maldivian tuna products have been rated as a “Best Choice” across all assessed categories.
The Ministry noted that this achievement reflects years of sustained efforts by local fishermen, seafood processors, and the Government to promote responsible and sustainable fishing practices.
Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam described the recognition as a proud moment for the Maldives, stating that receiving a country-specific rating from Seafood Watch demonstrates international acknowledgement of the Maldives’ fisheries model, built on sustainability and responsibility.
The Ministry further stated that the rating is expected to improve access for Maldivian fish exports to the North America, one of the world’s most significant markets for sustainably sourced seafood.
