The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the final results of the elections held last Saturday will be released at a press conference tomorrow.
Interim results have already been published on the Commission’s website, while the EC stated that the final outcome will be confirmed following the completion of complaint reviews and any necessary recounts.
Saturday’s polls included three processes: local council elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a public referendum seeking opinion on holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
According to EC statistics, a total of 294,876 people were eligible to vote, with a turnout of 73 per cent, marking the highest participation recorded in a local council election. The elections also saw the highest number of candidates contesting.
A total of 626 councillors were elected to island councils and 52 to city councils, while a similar number of members were elected to WDCs.
Meanwhile, the Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected councillors will be held on May 17, alongside the signing of declarations by WDC members.
