Construction of the southern waste management facility set to begin, with plans to develop a harbour and recycling facility in Addu City, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the minister stated that preparations have been completed to commence the second phase of the regional waste management system, which will expand existing operations into a more comprehensive and modern framework.

The system is designed to serve Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City, enabling safe and structured waste management across the southern region, including both inhabited islands and resorts.

The upcoming phase will include the development of a waste segregation system, storage facilities for residual waste, an administrative office, and a dedicated harbour to support waste transport. A recycling facility for reusable materials will also be established as part of the expansion.

The minister noted that the first phase of the project included the installation of an incineration system in Addu City, and that the next phase will further strengthen the region’s capacity to manage waste efficiently. He added that administrative work is ongoing and funding has already been secured to proceed with the project.

Waste management operations in Addu City are currently being carried out by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), with the expanded system expected to enhance environmental protection efforts across the southern atolls.
