The People’s National Congress (PNC) has secured a majority of council presidencies in Haa Alifu Atoll, winning seven out of the 13 island councils.
According to final results released by the Elections Commission, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won three council president positions, while independent candidates secured the remaining three.
PNC candidates were elected as council presidents in Thurakunu, Utheemu, Muraidhoo, Baarah, Vashafaru, Dhidhdhoo and Filladhoo, reflecting strong support for the party across key islands in the atoll. MDP secured victories in Hoarafushi, Ihavandhoo and Kelaa, while independent candidates won in Thakandhoo, Uligan and Molhadhoo.
Overall, PNC accounted for 54 per cent of council presidencies in the atoll, compared to 23 per cent each for MDP and independent candidates, further highlighting the party’s lead at the island level.
Council presidents, elected directly by residents, serve as the highest administrative authority within island councils, with the outcome reflecting the preference of voters across the atoll.
