A team from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has travelled to Faafu Feeali to assess damage caused by the fire that broke out at the island’s harbour.
The fire, which erupted on Thursday morning on a fuel vessel moored near the jetty, was brought under control later in the day. Authorities said the blaze destroyed the island’s ice plant and two fishing vessels, while other boats sustained damage.
According to the Ministry, efforts are underway to identify solutions to support the fishing sector in Feeali following the incident. The visit aims to assess the extent of losses and determine necessary response measures.
The ice plant destroyed in the fire had a production capacity of 25 tonnes and had been operated by Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) after being handed over by Fenaka. Officials noted that the proximity of the fuel vessel to the facility contributed to the spread of the fire.
A Bangladeshi national working on the vessel sustained injuries in the incident and is receiving treatment.
