The People’s National Congress (PNC) has taken the lead in Kaafu Atoll, securing council presidencies on seven of the nine islands.

According to the latest results of the council and WDC elections , PNC candidates were elected as council presidents in Kaashidhoo, Huraa, Himmafushi, Thulusdhoo, Maafushi, Gulhi and Guraidhoo.

Islands such as Maafushi and Himmafushi had previously been regarded as strongholds of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), making the results a notable shift in political support.

Meanwhile, independent candidates won the council presidencies in Gaafaru and Dhiffushi.

According to results released so far by the Election Commission, the PNC has also secured the highest number of council seats across the nation.
