The Government is working to revise policies to allow caregivers of persons with disabilities to apply for flats under its social housing scheme, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Abdulla Muththalib has said.

In a post shared on X, Minister Muththalib stated that efforts are underway to amend the criteria under the “category for persons with disabilities” within the Family Housing programme. The proposed changes aim to enable either persons with disabilities or their caregivers to apply for flats.

He noted that when applications are opened for flats under this category, the policy is being revised to ensure that caregivers can also be eligible to apply on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

The Ministry has previously introduced measures to ease the application process for those applying under the disability category. As part of these efforts, applicants are required to submit a copy of a disability card issued by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) to confirm eligibility.

The Ministry stated that this requirement was introduced to address challenges faced by applicants in proving their eligibility and to simplify the application process.

Applications for flats under the revised category remain open until the end of this month.

The Family Housing programme is designed to provide housing opportunities to families without adequate housing. Priority is given to vulnerable groups, including families with persons with disabilities, elderly dependents, and households with children under care.
