The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced the completion of works to redevelop the Tsunami Monument area into a public recreational space.
The project included replacing damaged sheet piles on the western side of the site, carrying out quay wall repairs, and upgrading the area to make it more accessible and user-friendly.
The Tsunami Monument area was constructed in memory of the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It was initially located near the original memorial site, but was later relocated to its current location during the tenure of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, when he served as Housing Minister, in connection with the development of the Sinamalé Bridge.
At the time, the area, known as Tsunami Monument Square, was developed and opened as a completed public space. However, due to a lack of maintenance in recent years, the site had deteriorated significantly, with damaged walkways, worn surfaces, and a general decline in its condition.
The redevelopment project was awarded to MTCC on 28 December last year as part of the Government’s efforts to improve public parks and open spaces in Malé, with the aim of creating more accessible and comfortable environments for the public. Work on the project began on 26 February this year.
