PNC secures 584 seats, leads in council and WDC elections

The People’s National Congress (PNC) has secured the highest number of seats in the local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, according to final results gazetted by the Elections Commission of Maldives.
The results show that PNC won 584 seats, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party secured 563 seats, giving the ruling party a lead of 21 seats following the completion of both first-round and runoff voting.
A total of 1,351 candidates were elected across the country, with 169 independents also winning seats. Other parties recorded smaller gains, including the Maldives Development Alliance with 23 seats, the Adhaalath Party with six seats, and the Jumhooree Party with four seats, while The Democrats secured two seats.
PNC led in most categories, securing 75 council president seats compared to MDP’s 73. In council seats reserved for women, PNC won 101 seats while MDP secured 88. The party also won 99 general council seats against MDP’s 82.
In Women’s Development Committees, PNC secured 84 chair positions compared to MDP’s 60, while in committee member seats, PNC won 216 seats against MDP’s 167.
However, MDP led in city constituencies, winning 45 seats, and 42 city committee seats.
The final results reflect the outcome of both initial polling and second-round voting held in constituencies where earlier results were tied.
