The Australian government has handed over the Guardian-class patrol vessel GPB-24 to the Maldives National Defence Force, in a move aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ capacity to secure and protect its maritime environment.

The handover ceremony was held at HMAS Stirling Naval Base in Perth and attended by senior officials from both countries, including Rear Admiral Brett Sonter of the Royal Australian Navy and Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Saleem expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Australia, describing the vessel as a significant contribution to enhancing the Maldives’ maritime defence capability. He also highlighted growing defence cooperation between the two countries, including collaboration in maritime security, training and education, and search and rescue operations.

Rear Admiral Sonter noted the strengthening defence partnership between Australia and the Maldives, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration to address shared regional challenges.

The donation of GPB-24 was first announced during the visit of Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles to the Maldives in June 2025. The vessel is intended to enhance the Maldives’ sovereign capability in managing and protecting its territorial waters.

The ceremony included the signing of certificates, exchange of commemorative gifts and a ribbon-cutting, followed by the hoisting of the Maldivian flag to mark the official transfer of ownership.

MNDF personnel have been undergoing conversion and orientation training in Australia, with the vessel scheduled to sail to the Maldives in late May after the completion of further training and sea trials.
