President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a strategic reduction in the workforce of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) is underway, describing the move as a key step towards strengthening institutional performance and improving operational efficiency.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Monday, President Dr Muizzu said the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises has issued directives to Government-linked companies to begin the downsizing process.

He stated that the reductions will be guided by performance evaluations, productivity assessments, and a review of role relevance. The President stressed that the process will be carried out in line with existing laws and established corporate procedures.

The initiative follows a circular issued by the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB), directing State-owned enterprises to reduce their workforce by 33 per cent, while placing greater emphasis on qualifications, education, and competency in future recruitment.

President Dr Muizzu also addressed concerns regarding the Malé Taxi Line service application developed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). He acknowledged that irregularities had been identified in the project and said the President’s Office has instructed both MTCC and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade to bring the project in line with established procedures.

Reaffirming the Government’s position on regulatory compliance, the President said immediate action would be taken in cases where any work is found to fall outside legal or procedural requirements.

As an interim solution, a web-based version of the taxi service has been introduced. President Dr Muizzu said work is continuing on a permanent application, expressing confidence that the final product will deliver a more reliable and improved service for the public once completed.
