The Cabinet has held discussions on addressing challenges facing the construction sector amid ongoing global instability, with a focus on ensuring the continued availability of essential materials.
The discussions took place during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, where ministers reviewed proposals aimed at resolving difficulties in the sector and maintaining a steady supply of construction materials.
During the meeting, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu directed relevant ministries to explore alternative solutions to address the shortage of rock boulders commonly used for coastal protection and harbour development. He proposed considering the use of construction and demolition waste, along with other materials, to develop more cost-effective, resilient, and environmentally suitable solutions for the Maldives.
The President also instructed relevant ministries to collaborate in conducting studies to identify viable alternatives. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises has been tasked with facilitating financial support, including research grants, to assist in developing such solutions.
In addition, the Cabinet decided to engage with companies offering modern coastal protection technologies to identify practical solutions to the ongoing shortage of rock boulders.
The Cabinet also deliberated on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade on strengthening fuel security in the Maldives.
Following discussions, it was decided that necessary regulations and standards should be developed within the existing legal framework to enhance fuel storage and security. The Cabinet further agreed that additional technical details would be reviewed by the Special Cabinet Committee on Middle East tensions before being submitted to the Economic Council for final approval.
