President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that freedom of assembly and expression will be upheld in the Maldives, while action will be taken in cases where protests involve serious violations of the law.
He made the remarks during a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Monday, as part of his weekly media engagements.
Speaking at the briefing, President Dr Muizzu said individuals have the right to express their views and gather peacefully, but stressed that these rights must be exercised within the limits of Islam and the Constitution.
Referring to a series of ongoing protests in Malé, the President said the Government’s approach has been to avoid taking action as long as possible. However, he noted that action would be taken if protests cross legal boundaries or involve serious offences.
“Measures have been kept to a minimum. Even when there is room to act, we have exercised restraint. But when actions such as harming police officers or breaking barricades occur, it affects the integrity of institutions,” he said.
President Dr Muizzu added that while all individuals are free to express their opinions, their conduct must remain within socially acceptable norms and legal limits. He reiterated that the Government fully supports the right to peaceful assembly and expression within the framework of the law.
The President contrasted past practices, stating that while previous administrations detained political leaders and their associates, no political leader has been jailed or summoned by police on political grounds during his administration.
President Dr Muizzu further stated that political actors are currently able to carry out their activities freely, adding that it is ultimately up to the public to decide whether those actions are appropriate.
