The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive growth and demographic resilience at the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), currently underway in Bangkok.
Speaking during the General Debate under the theme “Leaving no one behind: advancing a society for all ages in Asia and the Pacific,” Accountant General Mohamed Azad highlighted the unique demographic challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDs).
Azad outlined the Maldives’ response to an ageing population, pointing to the implementation of the National Ageing Policy and the upcoming National Action Plan on Ageing for 2025–2028. He noted that these efforts are supported by continued investments in universal healthcare, expanded social protection, and targeted measures to address non-communicable diseases.
The Maldivian delegation also highlighted a wider economic agenda aimed at strengthening the labour market and promoting gender equality. Initiatives include skills development programmes and the Fashaa Madhadhu loan scheme, designed to enhance women’s economic empowerment and participation in the workforce.
In addition, the Maldives linked its social and economic priorities to environmental and digital goals. The delegation emphasised efforts to strengthen climate resilience through renewable energy, alongside the “Maldives 2.0” strategy, which focuses on modernising governance through digital transformation and data-driven policymaking.
The Maldives is also playing an active role in the session’s proceedings. Permanent Representative to ESCAP Huda Ali Shareef is chairing Intergovernmental Working Group meetings, facilitating negotiations on key resolutions and decisions shaping regional policy.
