Former Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has warned that the spread of false allegations under the guise of independent journalism must be addressed, stating that such practices contribute to hatred and social unrest.
In a post shared on X on Monday night, Dr Khaleel said a small number of individuals claiming to be journalists were making unfounded accusations, which he said was fuelling division and eroding trust within society. He noted that these actions were not only harmful to those targeted, but also undermined the credibility of the wider journalism profession.
Dr Khaleel further stated that such conduct leads to a decline in social discipline and moral standards, while also damaging public confidence between individuals. He added that the actions of a few were unfairly casting a negative image over the entire field of journalism through the use of derogatory narratives.
He attributed the issue, in part, to the absence of clear standards, requirements and professional training needed to enter the field, emphasising that journalism, often described as the fourth pillar of a State, should be practised by individuals who meet defined criteria and possess the necessary expertise.
Highlighting the importance of the profession, Dr Khaleel said a responsible and independent press remains a vital component of the country’s social fabric, stressing the need to uphold integrity and accountability within the sector.
