Maldives Police Service has disposed of more than 185 kilogrammes of drugs seized in various cases, as part of ongoing efforts to manage narcotics held in police custody.

The disposal was carried out on April 27 in Dhoonidhoo, involving a range of confiscated items including 4,690 rubber packets, 2,768 cellophane packets, 335 empty film canisters, 462 bullets and 3,437 banned medicines. Police confirmed that a total of 1,809 items were disposed of during the operation.

Maldives Police said the process was conducted under the supervision of a designated committee established in line with procedures governing the disposal of drugs and drug-related seizures. The exercise forms part of standard measures to ensure the controlled handling of illicit substances held as evidence.

Journalists and members of the public who had registered in advance were present to observe the disposal process, in line with efforts to maintain transparency in such operations.

Police further stated that, following recent revisions to drug disposal procedures, only the quantities required for legal and investigative purposes are retained, while the remaining seized drugs are disposed of at the earliest opportunity.
