Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that the Maldives Police Service is empowered to conduct criminal investigations into the spread of false allegations against the President, stressing that such actions fall within the constitutional and legal framework governing accountability.

In a post on X, minister Ihusaan noted that the ongoing investigation relates to allegations considered unfounded, adding that law enforcement institutions have both the authority and responsibility to examine such matters in accordance with due process.

Referring to constitutional provisions, the minister highlighted that freedoms of expression and of the press are guaranteed rights, but not without limits. Citing Articles 27, 28 and 33, he said these freedoms must be exercised alongside responsibility, particularly where the dissemination of unverified claims may harm individual reputation or public trust.

Minister Ihusaan further stated that the spread of baseless allegations, especially involving the Head of State, can have broader implications for institutional confidence and social cohesion. He emphasised that in democratic systems, competent authorities must be able to investigate matters related to defamation and misinformation in order to uphold the rule of law.
