Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that any changes to taxi fares will be implemented following consultations at multiple levels, as the Government reviews concerns raised by drivers.

Speaking during the press briefing held at the President’s Office today, Minister Saeed said requests for fare revisions had been submitted by taxi drivers, particularly in light of rising global oil prices linked to ongoing developments in the Middle East. He noted that the matter requires careful consideration before any decision is made.

The minister said the issue would be discussed at Cabinet level, alongside broader engagement with relevant stakeholders, including taxi drivers and service operators. He added that discussions would aim to assess the impact of proposed changes and identify an appropriate course of action.

Minister Saeed further highlighted that the integration of the economic and transport portfolios is intended to strengthen sector management and improve service delivery. He noted that efforts are underway to expand digital services within the transport sector, drawing on existing systems under the Ministry of Economic Development.

Citing vehicle registration as an example, the minister said the process currently takes between 19 to 20 days at best, and up to two to three months in some cases, underscoring the need to improve efficiency. He also pointed to challenges in implementing existing taxi and transport regulations, stating that measures must be both enforced and refined where necessary.

The minister added that consultations will be conducted across regions and cities nationwide to better understand issues within the transport sector and work towards sustainable solutions.
