Managing Director of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), Hamdhan Shakeel --
Managing Director of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), Hamdhan Shakeel, has said that this is the time for independent and professional journalists to speak out, stressing the importance of responsible journalism and the protection of press freedom.
In a post shared on social media, MD Hamdhan said freedom of the press remains one of the most important foundations of a democratic system. His remarks came as police launched a search of a newspaper office in connection with a documentary published in March.
He noted that the sincere work carried out by responsible journalists over the years is being undermined by media activities driven by political motives, which he said are damaging the credibility and value of journalism.
MD Hamdhan said this is the moment for journalists who work independently and professionally to fulfil their role and speak openly in defence of ethical journalism.
He added that freedom of expression must be exercised in a way that does not violate the fundamental rights of others. According to him, journalism should not be used to insult individuals, make baseless accusations, or damage a person’s reputation.
He also stated that the current administration provides opportunities for journalists and that press freedom in the Maldives remains open to the fullest extent possible. However, he stressed that the Government would not allow anyone to be defamed under the name of journalism.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously stated that his Administration would not obstruct anyone from expressing themselves within the framework of journalism, but noted that such freedom must remain within the limits of Islam and the Constitution of the Maldives.
The President also said that the reputation of every citizen must be equally protected, describing it as both a constitutional and moral responsibility. He added that the Government fully supports fair, truthful and balanced journalism carried out without political bias, and assured that such reporting would face no obstacles.
