Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed --

The Maldives government has set a target population of at least 10,000 residents in its developing urban centres, according to Housing, Land, and Infrastructure Development Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed.

Speaking on PSM’s ‘Raajje Miadhu’, the minister highlighted that the population target supports infrastructure investment, including healthcare, education, and essential services.

Minister Dr Haidar noted that the government’s urban development plan is underway, aimed at offering opportunities for both public and private sectors. He emphasised that concentrating populations in designated urban hubs would reduce the need for travel to access services, helping to shift residents from smaller towns to larger, well-equipped centres.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has identified seven islands for development as urban centres: Ungoofaaru, Eydhafushi, Naifaru, Mahibadhoo, Nilandhoo, Kudahuvadhoo, and Fonadhoo. This initiative seeks to expand modern services across the atolls, reducing reliance on Malé.

Minister Dr Haidar also stressed that eco-friendly development is essential to address climate challenges, aiming to create safer, sustainable communities that provide educational, healthcare, and business opportunities for residents across the Maldives.
