During the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Culture-Based Climate Action at COP29, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim emphasised that protecting the Maldivian way of life means safeguarding the cultural heritage from climate change impacts.
Representing Maldives on behalf of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Minister Thoriq called for financial support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and urged wealthy nations to take action and share Special Drawing Rights (SDR) reserves with small island nations.
As the lowest-lying country globally at just 2.4 metres above sea level, the Maldives faces unique challenges from climate change. COP29 provided a platform for Maldives to advocate for small island nations at risk from rising sea levels.
