The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has increased the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) from 16 per cent to 17 per cent, effective July 1, following the Seventh Amendment to the Goods and Services Tax Act. The tax applies to tourism-related services such as resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and spas. MIRA has advised businesses to implement the new rate accordingly. The amendment also expands exemptions to include staff-only cafés, in addition to shops for tourism employees. Parliament passed the amendment on October 31, 2024.
