Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said ongoing global tensions, including the Middle East conflict, could lead to delays in infrastructure projects due to rising costs and supply challenges.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, the minister said higher global oil prices have made it more difficult to source construction materials, affecting both Government-led projects and wider activity in the construction sector.
He noted that projects requiring significant fuel use, including land reclamation and harbour development, have been particularly impacted, adding that efforts are ongoing to maintain material supply and manage costs as efficiently as possible.
Minister Dr Muththalib said the Government does not intend to halt any projects but may revise timelines where necessary, while also highlighting that similar challenges are being faced by private sector developments, particularly within the tourism industry.
He added that the Government’s priority remains ensuring the steady provision of essential services and goods, including water, electricity, fuel, cooking gas and basic food items, while continuing development work under the prevailing conditions.
