Maldives' sea-to-air cargo service has generated more than three million dollars for the economy, according to the CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim.
The service, launched in March with its first shipment in May this year, has already facilitated the transport of 1,008,000 kilogrammes of cargo through 210 containers. These containers primarily ship Bangladeshi-manufactured clothing to several destinations, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries. Thus far, 11 airlines have participated in these operations.
In a social media post, Wajeeh emphasised that the service is expanding rapidly and fulfils part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's initiative to boost the economy – he predicts that it would become a significant contributor to the economy.
Sea-to-air cargo service involves the transit of goods arriving by sea before being redirected to international destinations via air freight. The service operates through a collaborative effort between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Customs Service.
