Eidi is a cherished tradition during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha worldwide, where elders give money or gifts to younger family members as a gesture of love and blessing. This practice, deeply rooted in Islamic culture, symbolises generosity and strengthens family bonds.
In the Maldives, Eidi is a tradition the older generations recall fondly – receiving money from grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other extended family members during Eid. Among us are many Maldivians who remember this common practice after Eid prayers, and every Friday in the early 90’s. While the amount varies, the sentiment behind the gesture is what truly matters.
Beyond material value, Eidi fosters unity, gratitude, and kindness. Ultimately, Eidi is more than just a gift—it is a tradition that enhances the spirit of giving and celebration, creating lasting memories.
